Mapping Applications to the Cloud, by Darryl Chantry
Will all applications run in the Cloud? Should you attempt to port all of your existing applications to the Cloud? Should all your new applications be developed in the Cloud? What is this Cloud thing, anyway? These are a few of the questions that arise whenever you start thinking about using cloud services.

A Language for Software Architecture, by J.D. Meier
Building software applications involves many important decisions. By organizing these decisions as a language and a set of mental models, we can organize and share knowledge more effectively. Rather than a sea of information, we can quickly browse hot spots for relevant solutions.
Developing Parallel Programs, by Ranjan Sen, Ph.D.

A Pragmatic Approach to Describing Solution Architectures, by Mike Walker

Forrester: From Agile Development To Agile Engagement

    Executive Summary

Agile development practices continue to spread across development functions in technology companies. When technology companies adopt Agile practices in the development organization, these changes have ripple effects on other departments whose work is tied to the development cycle — such as QA, product management, marketing, sales, support, consulting, and business development. As our survey of technology companies shows, Agile can inspire improvements in how technology companies operate, even if they don't pay much attention to the effect on relationships between development teams and the rest of the organization. To reach the full potential of Agile and to avoid the potential pitfalls of these unintended consequences, companies need more conscious, dedicated efforts around the adoption of Agile across product-related functions.

  • Solutions Live – Green IT (Part 2)

This is a continuation of the first part.

image Alan Stone has taken the stage. He shares with us on how Microsoft internally does Green IT. Guess how many client computers we have, 94,000. Out of which, approx. 64,000 are running Windows 7 and are happy and excited about it.

By the way, i am one of the happy Windows 7 user. Powered by Windows 7! In any case, Alan shares with us how Microsoft dogfoods our own technology and how MSIT makes Microsoft’s commitment to Green IT come true.image

A slide caught my eye. Alan broke down the aspects of Green IT by not just looking at IT alone. To the right here, you’ll see how Alan broke them down. For example, you can reduce travel costs by putting in powerful communications tool. That can effectively reduce travel. Another example, people are made mobile and have the ability to work from virtually anywhere on earth.

image  Alan shared too the numbers on the amount of savings MSIT achieved by implementing virtualization. Something definitely worth a look. He also pulled out Unified Communications.

One more important thing hits me as an IT Pro. IT is thereimage to make their working staff in the organization productive. This is so super. IT would have failed if IT didn’t make people productive. Collaboration is made easier, data and processes are easily available.

Alan even shared a formula for data Center Efficiency.image

Many lessons were learnt and i shan’t spoil everything and stop you from watching the video. ;-)

Watch this space again. I’ll have the video up soonest possible.

Session 2: Inside Microsoft – Real World Benefits of Infrastructure Optimization

Side Note: Interesting. John Fernandes (Speaker for Session 1), shared about how Microsoft is making itself a responsible citizen on the Planet and doing what should be right for the business, and for earth. One very interesting thing that he brought up was, Green IT for a company can include operations and many aspects of being Green, saving off Travel and replacing them with technologies helps a company be efficient, cuts costs and be more productive.

I didn’t think of that. In Redmond, Microsoft cuts off 30,000 miles of travel between campuses and offices. Can you imagine how much time is saved, how much fuel was prevented from being burnt. For example, if you can do video conferencing (Live Meeting), you need not travel. There are so many technologies that help a company be efficient and increase productivity.

Virtualization was also mentioned. Using server virtualization, you can reduce the number of physical servers you have. Apart from hardware costs, in relation to Green IT and Data Center, you have on cooling, power consumption, physical rack space. Hmm. Reducing costs, nice…

Azure services is also being mentioned. Interesting. With respect to GreenIT, instead of paying for your own datSCCMa centers and paying for power, cooling, space..etc..You can in future, drop all those, and use Windows Azure. Microsoft provides the hosting, the services, and capabilities of what you need. Let Microsoft deal with the hosting, the power, the cooling and everything else. You really just be worried about how you leverage the platform and concentrate on your application.

Pom shared about how Microsoft platform provide compliance and governance. He demoed SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) with the Energy Star Management Pack. Making it super easy and removing the rocket science of energy/Green compliance.

Enough said, please watch out for the video coming. ;-)

  • Falcon Eye Demo on Microsoft Surface

The guys from Infusion have put together a short video on their Falcon Eye Application for Microsoft surface, we did a demo of this at last year’s BI conference in Seattle. Falcon Eye is all about data navigation, but not just any old data navigation it’s like the action sports version of data navigation. What does it do? Besides looking really cool, Falcon Eye can drill through data, view the organization at any level, city county, state, global, it’s all about hands-on manipulation of your world and your data.
